What Spiritual Direction with Me Is Like

I come to spiritual direction as a fellow traveler—creative, sensitive, unfinished, and deeply human.

Rather than offering answers or directing your steps, I try to create a gentle invitation into honest presence together. I don’t believe in “holding” space as something I possess or provide, but, as psychologist Matt Licata suggests, I try to enter a shared spaciousness with you—an open sky where whatever needs to appear can take flight, and where the sacred might surprise us both.

Rituals can be simple—lighting a candle, a deep breath, or witnessing silence. Sometimes, the practices we use may include poetry, prayer, art supplies, music, or just attentive listening for what is ready to be named or felt. Nothing here is required; all is offered with respect for your comfort, your preferences, your boundaries, and your own deep wisdom.

This is a place for the unfinished, the restless, those wrestling with loss, longing for meaning, or searching for home. I welcome every question, every ache, every “not sure,”  every longing for a more authentic path.

You don’t have to know where you’re headed. You’re invited to show up exactly as you are.

The Process

When you arrive, there is no need to prepare or perform—just come as you are. We begin our time by simply landing together: maybe a moment of quiet, a shared breath, or an invitation to bring God/Spirit/the Sacred into the space in whatever way feels good to you.

From there, we listen for what wants to be spoken—sometimes that's the story from your week, a fresh ache, a joy, a question, or a wordless mood that just needs room. We honor the sacredness of your life as it is unfolding right now. You are free to move at your own pace. I will follow your lead.

We close each session by gathering what feels important or unfinished—maybe with a prayer, a poem, another deep breath, or simply a few moments of silence. The hope is that you leave feeling a little more seen, a little more at home, and with a sense that what matters to you can continue to unfold on your path.

Practices We May Use

I don't believe there is one right way to listen for the sacred.

Depending on your needs and preferences, we may draw from a variety of practices, including:

  • Sitting in silence together

  • Mindful breathing

  • Simple prayer or blessing

  • Listening to or reflecting on poetry, scripture, or sacred texts

  • Quiet creative art making (like drawing, collage, or color)

  • Noticing what arises in the body

  • Using music or sound

  • Exploring imagination or images

  • Naming and honoring grief, joy, or longing in your own way

Each of these practices is simply an invitation, not an assignment—always chosen with respect for your comfort, your story, and your own deep knowing. You are never required to try anything that feels strange or unwelcome. You can always guide us toward what is truly helpful for you, moving at your own pace.

How, When, and Where We Meet

How Often?

Most people in spiritual direction meet for about 60 minutes, once every 2–4 weeks. This is a gentle rhythm that gives time for reflection and integration, but you can adjust the timing to fit your what's going on in your life.

Between Sessions

There’s no required “homework” or assignments—instead, you might find yourself noticing, journaling, or simply becoming more curious or attentive to your own inner life. You’re welcome to bring whatever arises in the meantime—questions, stories, or insights—whenever we meet again.

Where We Meet

Meetings take place in person in a comfortable, confidential space designed for reflection. Whether in person or online, the setting is intended to foster a sense of presence and stillness, allowing you to settle into the conversation. In-person sessions are offered on select evenings and Saturday mornings in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, as well as select Saturday and Sunday afternoons in Richfield, Minnesota. Virtual sessions are offered throughout the week.

The Cost

While I am in practicum (through May 2027), all sessions are offered free of charge. Following that time, if you'd like to continue, I will offer a sliding scale fee structure, as cost should not be a barrier to your ongoing work.
