Frequently Asked Questions
General
Spiritual direction is for anyone longing for honest space—the questioning, the hopeful, the grieving, the curious, the wanderers, the ones in transition, the ones who don’t feel they “fit.” You don’t have to be sure of your path, or even your beliefs—just open to exploring your spirit with gentle company.
No. I welcome people from any tradition, no tradition, or multiple traditions—doubters and “nones” as much as lifelong searchers, wounded church kids, and those on the edge. My own spiritual journey has wound through many rooms (Christian and beyond). All are welcome here.
Start by reaching out to me using the contact page. The first step is always a pressure-free conversation—we’ll schedule a short intro call just to see if this feels like a good fit for you, and to answer any questions.
At present (through May 2027), all sessions are free as part of my final spiritual direction practicum. If you want to continue after that, I will use a sliding scale so that cost is not a barrier to honest spiritual work.
Absolutely. What you share in spiritual direction stays between us. I hold a deep commitment to your privacy. The only exceptions would be rare, legal or ethical duties (for your safety or another’s).
Yes—I offer sessions online (Zoom or phone) and in-person. In-person sessions are available on select evenings and Saturdays in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and some Sundays in Richfield, Minnesota.
Spiritual direction is not therapy, coaching, or counseling.Therapy tends to focus on mental health, diagnosis, and healing; coaching is often goal- or outcome-oriented. Spiritual direction is gentler, slower, and more about noticing what’s stirring in your spirit—listening, not fixing. We’re not working “on” you, but listening with you to where meaning, ache, and hope meet. You might be a better fit for therapy if: you’re in acute pain, need strategies/coping for mood, trauma, daily functioning, or need diagnosis/support.You might be a better fit for spiritual direction if: you’re longing for honest space to bring spiritual questions, wounds, wanderings, doubts, or wonder—without anyone trying to fix, judge, or steer you.
You can also do both. Therapy and spiritual direction can complement each other well and with your permission I am happy to consult with your therapist.
There’s no such thing as “doing it wrong.” You don’t have to be spiritual, religious, or certain of anything. You come as you are—even if you’re tired, doubting, cynical, or just curious. There’s no performance here.
I am in the final phase of my Master’s in Directed Study Spiritual Direction (practicum), at United Theological Seminary of the Twin City a years-long journey that has included deep study, supervision, as well as my own path through a wide range of traditions. I am also a registered occupational therapist with a separate master’s degree, and a lifelong learner. I hold membership with Spiritual Directors International and am finishing up my formal training, with ongoing support and supervision.
Yes. I have a particular heart for these stories—grief of all kinds, especially wounds that don’t fit tidy boxes. Whether it's the loss of a mother, a beloved companion animal, or a sense of belonging, you are welcome and honored here.
Absolutely. There is never any pressure, guilt, or expectation here. You can schedule sessions as fits your life, take a break or stop any time, and return if and when it feels right for you.
If you’re wondering about anything not covered here, please reach out. No question or doubt is too small.
